Compass 2016 February Newsletter

It is hard to believe it but we are already more than half way through this school year.  How is your journey so far?  Are you weighted down by the busy schedules and unforeseen challenges?  Or are you seeing God at work?  Encouraged by how He is coming alongside you in your public school journey?

Hello Compass Educators and Parents!

It is hard to believe it but we are already more than half way through this school year.  How is your journey so far?  Are you weighted down by the busy schedules and unforeseen challenges?  Or are you seeing God at work?  Encouraged by how He is coming alongside you in your public school journey?

At Compass Ministry we are encouraged!!  God is so good!  He continues to bless this ministry and remind us that wherever He leads He will be right there with us.  He continues to create beautiful connections within the Christian public school community and is using these connections to provide support and encouragement to many.  He is leading many to step up and out of their comfort zones, leaning on Him like never before.  Educators are starting prayer groups and bible studies, moms are meeting regularly in prayer, students are stepping out in faith and some are even taking the time to become better equipped to live out their calling on their public school campuses.

Educator Connections Workshop

On February 6th, close to 40 parents and educators from Eden Prairie, Eastern Carver County and Minnetonka came together to connect, be equipped and to be encouraged!  Educators learned about how to legally live their faith at school, ways to bring their faith into their classroom and how to share their faith with their colleagues.  Parents connected with Christian educators from their districts and learned about how they can better support these educators on the front lines.  Representatives from CRU, FCA and Young Life talked about how to plug into Christian community on your campuses.  All prayed about how God may unite Christians within their districts for His purposes and for His glory.  If you are an educator or parent in Eden Prairie, Eastern Carver County or Eden Prairie and want to be involved in this effort email us at compassinfo@compasslink.org.

Minnesota Student Survey

Between the months of January and May federal law is requiring MN schools to administer the Minnesota Student Survey to grades 5, 8, 9 and 11.

The Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) is a triennial survey of young people regarding a variety of risk and protective factors. The survey asks young people questions about their activities, opinions, behaviors and experiences. It includes questions on a variety of issues, such as substance abuse, school climate, violence and safety concerns, healthy eating, out-of-school activities, connections to school, community and family and many other questions. The survey is administered in schools, alternative learning centers and juvenile correctional facilities. The purpose of the survey is to:
• -Provide data for program planning and evaluation.
• -Meet state and federal student survey requirements.
• -Address relevant issues confronting students.
• -Mark trends over time.
• -Involve schools/other educational settings statewide and provide data for local use.

Parents - Please take some time to review the questions on this survey and remember you have the right to opt out if you are uncomfortable allowing your child to participate. Here is the link to the full surveys per grade level http://mnstudentsurvey.org/instruments. You will see the questions are quite personal and address thoughts and attitudes about topics like gender identity, sexual behavior, and alcohol and drug use. The schools are required by law to notify parents of the dates the survey will be administered in your school. If you have not received this information or if you have any questions you can contact your principal directly.

Religious Liberties Seminar for Educators and Families

Can students legally pray at school? Read the bible during reading time? Share their faith with a classmate? How do teacher rights differ from those of our students? Frequent alarming media stories show us it's more important than ever that we know our legal rights as Christians in the public schools. Attend an upcoming Religious Liberties Seminar to equip yourself and your family with this important information. Grace Church, Sunday, March 13, 7pm. Room M209. RSVP to compassinfo@compasslink.org. Free event!

Hebrews 12:1 - Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
