A Time of EQUIPPING
"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." - 1 Peter 3:15
Legal Freedoms Seminar
Is it legal for your students to pray at school? Can they share their faith in their homework assignments? Are student-led bible studies at school even legal? As our freedom of religion and freedom of speech are threatened as Christians, it is more important than ever that we understand our rights as Christians within the public schools. Join us as Clint Elliot from Alliance Defending Freedom along with our own Heather Kohnen and Hannah Nguyen educate us on our rights as laid out by the US Department of Education. If you are a parent of a public school student, K-12, you don't want to miss this!! Educators and students also welcome! Thursday, April 16th, 7pm M154 Grace Church , enter through door #1. Questions and RSVP to email@example.com.
On March 13-15th, 29 educators from the metro area met at Oak Ridge Conference Center in Chaska and were equipped to become modern-day Daniels within their public schools at Minnesota's 5th "Daniel Weekend." Daniel Weekends are held in partnership with Tentmakers and Christian Educators Association. These committed groups invest entire weekends to discern how God may be calling them to transform their schools and districts through the love and truth of Jesus Christ. So thankful for these missionaries in our midst!! Pray for our Christian educators on the front lines of the largest mission field in our country! Young Daniel Training Program
Do you have a student at least 18 years of age who may be interested in being a part of a program designed to raise up and equip young men and women as "modern-day Daniels?" Tentmakers has developed a dynamic year-long "Young Daniel" training program to prepare students for a lifetime of Christ-centered leadership. Two upcoming Young Daniel workshops outlining the program will be held in Chanhassen at the Holiday Inn Express, Saturday April 11, 4:00-6:00pm or Monday April 13, 6:30-8:3-pm. For more information go to www.tentm.org.
Here is an excerpt about their program:
A Young Daniel program is has been developed to raise up young men and women with vision, courage, character and faith in Jesus Christ who have the imagination, moral fiber and tenacity to lead in all walks of life (business, industry, education, the Arts and entertainment, government, the media, family and the Church). This program is built upon intensive Christ-centered leadership training and coaching. It is designed for High School graduates or College students/graduates who are willing to invest a minimum of one year to enhance their education and career by growing in wisdom, stature and favor with God and man (Luke 2:52). Daniel of the Bible built his life upon a foundation of truth and learning and worked for some of the toughest bosses in history. The pressures he faced were enough to break most people! His life of service and devotion to God inspired the transformation of an entire kingdom. The Young Daniel year helps serious students build a solid foundation for life-long leadership and service.
A Time of CONNECTING
"Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the
habit of doing, but encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching." - Hebrews 10:24-25.
God is working in the Minnetonka school district! Many from this district are connecting with other staff members in their buildings for prayer groups and bible studies. These educators are serious about living their faith authentically in their classrooms and hallways and challenging their colleagues to do the same. In March over 100 of these staff members came together as a district in prayer and worship, sharing what God is doing in their district, how God is leading them individually and corporately and challenging each other to a higher standard. This group, Tonka Staff for Christ, and is the first of its kind but is modeling for other districts what it means to come together as Christian educators within the public schools. Are you interested creating Christian Community in your school or district by starting a staff prayer group in your building or a similar group in your district? If so, contact Heather Kohnen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
A Time of PRAYING
"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer." - Romans 12:12
Compass continues its' commitment to lifting up our schools in prayer. We have met weekly since school began and will continue through May. Join us on Wednesday nights at 7pm at Grace Church, CA120C at 7pm.
A Time of SERVING
From Anita Anderson, head of Compass Service Arm
Spring Break may have just ended and Summer may be just ahead, but we are already thinking about.......school supplies!!! Building off of the success of last years' Pack It Up backpack and school supply drive, Grace Church has plans underway to collect school supplies for 2500 students in metro and southwest suburbs areas. Compass is working alongside the church to determine the needs in our area. Over 200 backpacks/school supplies will be designated for our area schools. So be watching for collection announcements coming this summer starting with VBS! For more information on Compass' service initiatives to our schools go to www.compasslink.org/service.
A Time of ACTION
From Daphne Edwards, head of Compass Legislative Arm
The state legislature continues to consider legislation that will impact the rights of heterosexual and GLBT students in public schools. Both the House of Representatives and Senate introduced "Student Safety and Privacy" bills that would undo the MN State High School League's transgender policy and the St. Paul Public Schools. You'll recall from last December that the MN State High School League policy allows students to try out for, and participate on, a sports team that matches their gender identity. Last month, St. Paul Public Schools approved a policy that grants transgender students access to bathrooms and locker rooms according to their gender identity. Unfortunately, neither the House nor Senate were able to get the bill on the calendar for a vote in this session.
Despite not getting a vote as we'd hoped, I spoke to one House Representative who thought the extra time could give more opportunity to stir up more support. The best thing we can do is nothing new - pray and put pressure on the legislature to support the bill. Thank you for continuing to contact your legislators regarding these bills! Public pressure against them is crucial. It is also important that we vocalize our support for the Representatives and Senators who author and support these bills. For more information on Compass' legislative involvement go to www.compasslink.org/legislative.
A Time of BOLDNESS
From our friends at Focus on the Family
Parents...do you wish your student was more comfortable sharing and living their faith at school? If so, inform your students about Focus on the Family's "Day of Dialogue" coming up on April 16th. What is "Day of Dialogue?" In short, it's a free-speech initiative that creates a safe place for public school students to exercise their religious freedoms and express their deeply held Christian beliefs in a loving and respectful manner. As students at a public school or college, you can help your classmates and friends hear more of the story-like the truth about God's deep love for us and what the Bible really says about His redemptive design for human beings and relationships. Understand how you can initiate deeper and freer conversations when current-day topics-especially subjects that delve into faith and God's design for us-are brought up in your school. For more information and how to participate go to www.dayofdialogue.com.
To be added to our mailing list or to have your name removed, send a request to email@example.com. If you would like to become more involved in this dynamic ministry contact Mindy or Norene at firstname.lastname@example.org.
May God bless our public schools!!
